During our recent visit to Gaoyou we saw examples of the industrial capacity that Gaoyou has. A very large garment factory we toured was impressive for its cleanliness, and good working conditions. We also visited a just completed retail/wholesale garment district that will put Gaoyou on the garment industry map now that it is open, and filling with tenants.

I am very encouraged by the changes I see coming to Gaoyou. A large, new, Renmin Hospital is rising behind the existing hospital will better serve the district’s residents. I also saw a new, several hundred unit, apartment block that would fit in well in an upscale district in any US city.

In my earlier writings, I wrote of pollution issues facing Gaoyou. As I’ve looked around my own city, I recognize that many of these problems are universal. The citizens, and government, of Gaoyou are working hard to address the environmental issues facing them. In the book New Gaoyou, New Span the leaders of Gaoyou recognize the importance of the environment by writing “While in need of gold and silver mountains, we are in need of green water and blue mountains. Without green water and blue mountains, gold and silver mountains would not exist.” With this concept in mind, Gaoyou is growing in a manner that recognizes environmental impacts, strives to minimize them, and in the process improves the quality of life for its citizens
