A TORNADO swept across eastern China, killing at least 14 people and
injuring 146, the latest casualties from bad weather that has devastated
several regions of the country this summer.
Seven of the deaths were reported in Gaoyou, a city in Jiangsu Province,
where the worst tornado in 50 years also injured 53 people in 11
villages and toppled 715 houses on Tuesday, the city government said
yesterday.
It said 12 of the injured were in a serious condition and estimated the
city's economic losses at around 55 million yuan (US$7.2 million).
"The tornado ravaged the Huxi area of Gaoyou for about an hour," the
government said in a news release. "High winds and heavy rain cut off
power and telecommunications, ripped roofs off buildings and uprooted
thousands of trees."
Sixteen companies were closed after the tornado destroyed their
workshops and equipment.
The tornado originated in Tianchang City in neighboring Anhui Province,
where it killed another seven people, injured 93 and destroyed more than
100 homes. Seven bodies were dug out of the rubble.
Among the injured, 35 were in a serious condition yesterday, officials
said. Another 200 people were evacuated.
Forecasters warned last night of possible floods along the Huaihe River,
which runs through the region. The upper reaches of the river have
already reached critical levels, officials said yesterday.
The country's drought and flood control and prevention center has warned
that China is entering the main flood season and must brace for surging
waters along major rivers.
By Monday, floods had caused 233 deaths and destroyed 118,500 houses in
18 areas, while droughts in the north had left nearly 7.4 million people
short of drinking water, the state flood and drought prevention
headquarters said.
Heavy rain in Anhui's stretch of the Huaihe River has caused at least
110 million yuan in economic losses, an official with the provincial
flood prevention and drought relief headquarters said yesterday.
"Precipitation has averaged about 100 millimeters along the Huaihe in
the past week, and in some areas, precipitation has exceeded 200
millimeters," said Long Bin, who works in the headquarters.
More than 48,700 hectares of land have been submerged by the downpours.

Your reunion party is a party of
love. Because of love, you had come to China, to Gaoyou, to adopt your
daughters. Even though, they have lost the care of their biological
parents for different reasons and circumstances. But you had come. You
had become the parents that they have been waited for a long time, the
parents that they had only seen in their dreams. When they smiled in
your arms, when they grew under your care, when they called you father
and mother with tenderness, your love had lightened their lives. You are
the best parents in the world. Your hearts are deep and big.
Your reunion party is a party of
communication. You share common experiences, common subjects, because
you all have a daughter from Gaoyou. You have taught them to understand
themselves and nature. You also taught them the way to deal with the
reality, and the way to distinguish love and beauty. And yes, because of
love and beauty, everything will be right, be in order and be
harmonious. You have let them to know Gaoyou through map and picture
book. During the party, the calling of all beautiful memories will build
the friendship between adoption families and children.
Your reunion party is a party of sweetness. A famous person
said, “Nothing is sweeter than a baby.” You will harvest sweet happiness
after your hard work. The pure soul, the smiling face like a flower, the
clear look of the children will penetrate into your thoughts and lives
little by little. It is like a river of vitality that flows through your
heart.
The people of your home town will share the success and
happiness with you. They will watch the growth of the children with you.
They will praise the life of the children with you.
We will wish the best for the children under the same blue sky!
